They say that when you do handwork, your brain switches into a meditative state. I can confirm that! When you sew by hand, your heart rate slows down, your nervous system calms, your hands are busy and your mind rests.

Treat yourself to a moment for yourself amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life and come along to learn something new. Spend a Thursday evening in a healing circle of women. If you’ve never held a needle and thread before, this workshop will teach you how. If you already have some experience with hand sewing, this is where you’ll consolidate and develop your skills. I’ll show you the basics you can build on, and then you can develop your own sewing style as you wish.

Textile appliqué is a technique for sewing fabric designs onto a base. Together, we’ll create a small work of art: first, we’ll hand-sew a motif that you’ll draw yourself or choose from existing designs. Then we’ll pad the sewn-on design with wadding and hand-quilt it so that it stands out nicely from the base.

My name is Júlia Šmidáková and I’ll be your instructor today. I love handicrafts and have been practising them for several decades. I embroider traditional folk patterns, but I’m also skilled in modern techniques. I’m the proud holder of several accredited certificates in traditional textile techniques and a graduate of a fashion college, so I’m certainly not self-taught. I collaborate with ÚĽUV and also embroider for my own brand, HEAVENLY. During the workshop, I’ll be happy to share my practical tips and tricks with you.
